Portland Airport

More than 85,000 square yards of custom-designed carpet from J+J Flooring Group has been installed as part of a renovation to Portland International Airport (PDX) this year.  The equivalent of 10 Portland city blocks, the J+J carpet is an updated design of the existing carpet, which has achieved an iconic status among Portland residents and PDX travelers during its 20-plus years at the airport.

The Port of Portland, the authority who oversees management of PDX, teamed up with two local architecture firms, ZGF Architects LLP., and Hennebery Eddy, to design the new one-of-a-kind carpet pattern.  Immense care and consideration was given to the new design since PDX serves as a first-impression point for millions of travellers and visitors to the city and the state each year.  The carpet will covers approximately 90% of the terminal’s entire flooring area.

The new design is a contemporary interpretation of the original pattern.  According to the Port: “It is based on organic and man-made shapes found within the surrounding areas of PDX, including airplane wings, runways, leaves, trails, and waterways, and the roadway canopy structure at PDX. Mood-enhancing colors were carefully selected to elicit a calm and inviting environment, as well as colors found in green spaces, natural landscapes and flight paths.”
